Homeopathy is a natural system of treating all kinds of illnesses. It is a subtle yet powerful system which works with the energies of life and produces genuine long-term cures in all kinds of illness. Like acupuncture and other similar methods of treatment, it is based on holistic principles. This means that the medicine treats the whole human being, not just one part or one disease. This is based on the belief that if one part is sick then this is the result of sickness of the whole person. As a result of putting the whole system back into balance, any disorder of an individual part of the body is put right from within.
There are four principles on which homeopathy is based. The first two are shared with other holistic health treatments:
The most important principle of homeopathy is the law of similarity. The word "homeopathy" comes from two Greek words meaning "similar suffering". The law of similarity states:
Whatever a medicine can cause in large doses in a healthy person, it can also cure in small doses in a sick person.
Put very simply, like cures like. The symptoms which a substance can cause can also be cured by it when it is given in the right way. For example, arsenic causes diarrhea and great weakness, accompanied by restlessness and anxiety. Yet homeopathic doses of arsenic have cured many people of this condition, whether due to food poisoning, colitis or cholera.
The homeopathic medicine does not treat the illness directly, but enables the human body to do the necessary healing for itself. The focus is on the patient rather than the disease. Because the remedy is similar to the disorder it can stimulate the body to respond to the disease and cure it. Understanding this is crucial to the understanding of homeopathy as a whole.
In health, every moment of our lives, our bodies are keeping us free of disease by constantly adjusting and balancing all the activities of the body. We adapt successfully to environmental changes and psychological stresses and defend ourselves against bacteria and viruses. Living organisms have the natural power to maintain health built into them. We become ill only if our health maintenance system breaks down. Then we become susceptible to disease, and in order to be healthy again our defenses need to be strengthened.
Nearly all homeopathic medicines are made from naturally occurring substances, mainly herbs and minerals. However, homeopathy is distinct from herbalism because the medicines are diluted in a special way. They are diluted stage by stage until they contain extremely small quantities of the original ingredient. At the same time they are shaken, or succussed, in a strictly controlled sequence. This process is called potentization.
Paradoxically, the most dilute medicines have the most powerful healing effect. Traditional science is unable to explain how such dilute doses can be effective, but several discoveries in new physics are starting to provide an explanation.
Although there are traces of homeopathic ideas right through medical history, homeopathy was only established as a medical system about 200 years ago, in Germany, by a successful doctor called Samuel Hahnemann. He had become thoroughly disenchanted with the primitive treatments then available and began doing his own research. His first momentous discovery was that when he took an overdose of a certain drug used as a malaria treatment, he got malaria symptoms. This was the first formal demonstration of the law of similarity.
But the early years of the 19th century the homeopathic method was established. The situation in medical circles was different in those days, and homeopathy was not seen at first as an alternative medicine. Many of the treatments used at that time were rather barbaric and people welcomed the gentle way of homeopathy. It spread rapidly across Europe and to the United States. Treatments were extremely successful, and the system was adopted by Queen Victoria. Ever since then the British Royal Family has used and supported homeopathy.
The most publicized success of the 19th century was in the cholera epidemics of the 1850s. When death rates at the cholera hospitals were announced in Parliament in London the rates of the homeopathic hospitals were not included. But one MP insisted that the records be presented. They showed the extraordinary benefits of homeopathic treatment. In the homeopathic hospital in London 16.4% of cholera patients died; elsewhere it was 51.8%.
But the rise of homeopathy did not continue. As our present medical system grew stronger at the turn of the century, homeopathy went into a decline in the Western world which lasted until recently. Now homeopathy's fortunes are rising again as the limitations of conventional medicine become apparent. The demand for homeopathy is increasing dramatically and is now much more widely used in Europe.
There's a growing movement in Medical Science towards a holistic vision of the human body: Mind is considered as playing a role together with physical influences in the origin and healing of a given disease. Whereas an ongoing tendency of techno-medicine follows a fragmented approach to therapy, Homeopathy, on the contrary, has always considered disease as a disorder of all human aspects.
