Chi Kung, the study of the energy in the universe, is one of the greatest cultural achievements which China has contributed to the human race. It was through the study of Chi that the balance between the Yin and Yang forces in the universe was understood. This understanding led to the formulation of the Tao (the natural way) which became one of the guiding principles of Chinese philosophy. Naturally, this Tao has been used to explain not only nature but also mankind. The Chinese have hoped that the study of the Tao could show the way to improve one's health or even to extend one's life. This led to the development of Chinese medicine. The circulation of Chi in the body was studied, which became the field of human Chi Kung.
According to Chinese medical theory, the Chi or energy body is considered Yin, while the physical body is considered Yang. Chi cannot be seen, but it can be felt. The Yin aspect of your body is related to your thinking, soul, spirit, while the Yang aspect executes the decisions of the Yin. Neither part can survive by itself. They must balance and coordinate with each other so that life can exist .s the source of life, and the actions of the physical body are the manifestations of life. When the Yin is strong, the manifestations of Yang can also be strong. When Yin is weak or too strong, the Yin and Yang may lose balance and sickness can result. For this reason, Chinese medicine and Chi Kung are primarily concerned with how to maintain the correct balance of Yin and Yang.
According to many documents, although many other cultures have discovered the circulation of Chi, none of them have studied it as deeply as the Chinese. It was only in the last twenty years that the Western world has begun to accept the concept of chi, equating it with the bioelectricity circulating in the human body. More and more, Western doctors are starting to recognize that abnormal or irregular Chi or bioelectronic circulation is one of the main causes of physical and mental illnesses. Many Western physicians are sending patients to acupuncturists for an alternative method of treatment for certain diseases that Western medicine has difficulty treating. Some are even encouraging patients to take up Chi Kung or Tai Chi as a means of regulation blood pressure.
In order to understand Chi Kung, we must first understand What Chi is. Chi is the energy or natural force which fills the universe. There are three general types of Chi. Chi is energy and it is found in the heavens, in the earth and in every living thing. All of these different types of energy interact with each other, and can convert into each other. Chi exists in everything, from the largest to the smallest. Since the range of Chi is so vast, the Chinese have divided it into three categories, parallel to the three powers of heaven, earth and man. Generally speaking, heaven Chi is the biggest and the most powerful. This heaven Chi contains within it the Earth Chi, and within this heaven and earth chi lives man, with his own Chi. Human Chi is, therefore, art of heaven chi and earth Chi.
The Chinese people believe that human chi is affected and controlled by heaven chi and earth Chi. Most chi kung research has focused on Human Chi. Since Chi is the source of life, if we understand how Chi functions and know how to affect it correctly, you should be able to live a long and healthy life. Meditation and moving Chi Kung exercises are widely used by the Chinese people to improve their health or even to cure certain illnesses.
